Woodyboater Bryant's Marina 1946 Runabout

Post by Pete DeVito » Mon Feb 22, 2016 9:06 pm

Take a look at Woodyboater today at the 1946 17' deluxe runabout. It really caught my eye to look at the stain on the hull sides with every bung standing out like dot's down it. Wow! the judges wouldn't even let them in the show with a look like that.

Some of the less expensive boats like the deluxe and others at that time came with filler over the screws and not plugs so that is what your seeing.

Some prewar boats also had putty in place of wood bungs, we have a 1936 18 footer and a 1936 19 foot runabout with putty bungs. Could have been some cost saving measures during the depression.

well, apparently they didnt use too much varnish at cc either in those days (like 5 or 6 coats). Dave Lobb mentioned that the standard practice at Bryant's was to remove all the hardware upon receipt of boats from cc and add a few more coats of varnish before putting them out for sale.

I have heard that some 1946 Deluxe Runabouts received something other than mahogany on the topsides. Possibly Spanish Cedar? The sides on the one at Bryant's appears quite different than the adjacent Custom topsides. The bungs do appear to be putty filled, much like the 1942 Special Runabout was built.

The Deluxe in this photo may also have dark stained covering boards and king plank (hard to tell).

On my 1948 17' Deluxe the decks were putty filled and the cover boards and side planks had bungs. The 46 in the photo looks like they went light on the stain also. These old photo's are great to have when researching and wanting to put the boat back into original condition.
I found some very valuable information at the museum when I was researching my Capri. I knew there was a convertible top but could not find an actual photo of what it really looked like. The museum had one photo in the archives.
Great Stuff and glad Matt shares these photos with us.

When we stripped the vinyl from the aft deck of our cruiser, the bungs were filled with putty. We varnished over them and went with the bowling alley look. I'll to find a picture...
