U22 Blower Installation

Post by tabbs creek » Sun Aug 28, 2016 5:03 pm

Hi,
I have a 1951 U22 with 5 vents; one from the bow light into a galvanized sheet metal tube to the bilge, two in the topsides (one port, one starboard) chrome vent had openings forward and brought air into the sidewalls between planks and ceiling boards. There was a piece of thin masonite behind the ceiling boards in that section presumably to direct incoming air into the bilge and two on the aft deck with the galvanized sheet metal tubes. Pictures below. I am restoring so I have a clean slate. What is the preferred and accepted way to properly vent the bilge using the existing holes and bright work? Suggested equipment and placement? Pictures of a U22 that has an updated ventilation system?
Thank you,
Eric

The blower is designed to exhaust bilge air out, not supply fresh air into the bilge. You would be best served by removing one of the galvanized pipes from the aft vents and installing the blower to exhaust through an aft facing deck vent. Available space around the fuel tank and rear seats will dictate whether the blower is mounted high up on the transom or low down in the bilge. Using 3 inch flexible hose to connect the blower to the deck vent will work best. You want the "intake" of the blower to be down in the lowest part of the bilge to remove any fuel vapors as they are heavier than air and will collect down low. You can find black 3 inch blower hose if you don't like the white dryer vent looking type. I used this on my 25 foot Lyman.

Not sure if you're concerned about keeping things looking original, but you could fabricate a simple switch bracket on the backside of the dash panel so the switch is accessible by reaching up behind the panel to operate the switch instead of drilling a new hole through the dash panel. Only you will know it's there.

I will be starting the restoration of a 53' 22 foot Sportsman soon and will utilize these same steps when I get to that part of the project.

Not on a U22 but this is how I hid my blower. Lateraled in to the existing galvanized tube and hid the blower behind the fuel filter.

I would feel safer terminating the hose through the vent as Terry has done.

Did you paint the white hose with bilge paint?

Used metal flex and painted it and the blower with mahogany red bilge paint.
The only plastic on my boat is the blower and the bilge pump. ;)

I'll be there with a '56 wagemaker runabout on a '56 gator trailer. Land display this year with the restored trailer, displayed in the water last year and did well. See you there-
