Faring and filling. What to use on a 1961 Chris craft
There are many places I need to fill holes. On the rail under the rub rail, small rotten places. Up till low I have used bondo glass because I have not found anything else. I also need to smooth out the planking after I strip, redo the seams, and refassen.
Also what are people using to plug the screw holes? Again I would rather not use bondo glass. Plugs are a possibility. I can order them at $.04 a piece.
Any advice would be great.

His books are about runabouts. This is not a runabout. It's a 50' constellation. The material and processes for caring for them are not the same.

It's my fault for not specifying up front
Re: Faring and filling. What to use on a 1961 Chris craft
There are many techniques in Don's books that are applicable to any size and type boat -including plugging holes.

Lucky me, his book is in the iTunes Store. Purchased it but to be honest I am dyslexic and not a book person. I learn by doing or watching, remember it's the YouTube generation. I want to learn old stuff in new ways

You probably see Don recommends famowood for the screw holes. That's what we use. Post up some photos on the other holes and imperfections for us if possible. The experts here love photos..hill160881 wrote:Lucky me, his book is in the iTunes Store. Purchased it but to be honest I am dyslexic and not a book person. Thanks for that product recommendation. Was that the latex or the original?
Pictures? That's dangerous on this site. Lots of purist on the board
I am refitting and doing a retro-mod. I want it to look original but be modern on the inside. New fuel injected crusader 8.1l engines, a modern helm with touch screens instead of old gauges...... So to many pics and some will start steaming from the ears. Haha.
I will post some of what I am dealing with in a bit. But this thread has a few.

Thanx for the link to your pics. You have a very worthy project there. The craftsmanship you exhibit is is quite nice. As far as the resto-mod thing goes, it boils down to what you want to use and live with. I am a purist at heart but you won't catch any guff from me. Keep up the good work and post more pics as you progress.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

There are these holes. I filled them with a outdoor wood filler and all of them either drew or protruded. I have wooden plugs I am planing top use this time unless I find a better way.
The rail.
My issue with plugs is they never match the original crap this boat was made from. It is not mahogany. I don't care what CC calls it but this is not a mahogany boat. In fact Meranti, which is what its actually made of, is not even a species of mahogany. I may try to get some red Meranti material to compare with.

For me I would love to restore the boat to original condition, I to am a purist, but that is just not an affordable reality. The previous owner, I call him captain sawzal, made that to expensive, but he did keep her solid. It would cost so much more than its worth to do a original restoration it would be pointless. So I am doing what I can to keep her looking original on the outside and keep her usable, livable and modern/up to date everywhere else.

Yes I have to re-strip the starboard side, remove the screws, set them deeper then drive 5000 plugs. Fun times.

Which famowood? Latex or original? I would lean towards original but that a guess based on the application.
And to fair the sides prior to painting to get it smooth? I would rather avoid two part fairing compounds as they tend to be harder than the wood and sand at different rates.

Great boat you have there, WOW! I use the original famowood. http://eclecticproducts.com/products/fa ... iller.htmlhill160881 wrote:Thanks for that product recommendation. Was that the latex or the original?

I believe somewhere on here I read filling a empty caulking tube with the famowood and use a gun to fill all the holes. In your case maybe a pneumatic gun may be the ticket.
I enjoyed your youtube videos and keep up the good work. Lots of info here for you I'm sure.

I have a ryobi 18 volt calling gun and also have a refillable tube. That's great info. Did not think of that.

Re: Faring and filling. What to use on a 1961 Chris craft
That is one BIG boat you have there, and I am delighted to see the work you are doing. For our 1937 35' cruiser, I will use filler (likely Famowood) for any screw hole that will be under paint. I have been cutting plugs from the clean parts of original pieces that I had to replace because of rot and splitting. Although I can make hundreds of matched plugs, filler is easier and much faster. I stripped the hull and repainted in 1990-1, and used bondo to fill the holes where the original lead paste filler was loose. 25 years later I can't tell the location of 'new' filler from the original. I think the key is to ensure the wood around the hole is bone dry when you fill it. Man, that is a BIG boat..... and it is YOUR boat so YOU make the rules. Bravo!

I used Interlux white surfacing putty on my white painter hull side screw holes and Interlux underwater seam compound for bottom screw holes. If I do any epoxy filling of minor imperfections and small rot areas I use West System thickened with their fairing filler powder. Nice Boat!

I was going to comment on how much I liked the 'skirt' that collects the nasty bits. Mucho good on you to take care of the environment! As JR points out, some excellent products around, but the best stuff is worthless without proper preparation. I will check out the Interlux product when the time comes.

Re: Faring and filling. What to use on a 1961 Chris craft
My process is this.
-strip to bare wood.
-refasten. One new screw next to every old one, removing the old one and resetting it in wood glue. Ya overkill, sue me.
-fill holes
-use smiths penetrating wood epoxy to seal everything(cpes)
-calk grooves with sikaflex
-fair the boards smooth again and sand groves uniform again.
-prime and paint.

Re: Faring and filling. What to use on a 1961 Chris craft
When you drill for the new screws I'd off set a bit from the old to avoid splitting. You probably already know this, but when you drill, use Fuller tapered bits with countersink set exactly to your screw size and length. I don't use CPES as a primer on my cruiser hull because I don't want to restrict the woods ability to breath and dry out. Sikaflex is a great product but you should clean out all the seams well and apply after the first coat of primer. Get some primer into those seams. After it skims over apply another full primer. She's a fantastic BIG boat! Happy Screwing!
