Dave Jerome's gel stain

Post by boat_art » Fri Jan 20, 2017 4:08 pm

Anyone know who is handling Dave's gel stains? Since he died his widow was doing it but it seems the phone is now disconnected.
Thanks

Interesting, I talked to Wood-Kote directly. They told me Dave bought the materials from them and mixed his own colors.

Trust me, it's the same. Dave was funny about the formulas. He didn't mix them, Wood Kote did down the street. Call Mike Mayer, he is carrying the stain now.

Interesting thread....

I used Dave's gel stain and coated it with Pettit's 2018 penetrating sealer as recommended by Dave. I then started my varnish coats and when I pulled the tape, it pulled up everything down to the stain! In previous restorations I've used filler stains with the first seal coat being thinned varnish. I was/am not happy with the Pettit product. I did call Dave to make sure the gel stain was a mineral spirit based stain and he assured me it was. So I have no idea why the 2018 wouldn't penetrate. Won't do that again.

Interesting. I only use CPES and then only after the stain has outgassed thoroughly. I sometimes use thinned Epiphanes for a sealer but have found that CPES helps the build up of varnish.

Im thinking about mixing my own colors such as blonde, black for prewar covering boards, and other colors besides red mahogany by buying a can of wood-kote white and adding pigments. Any suggestions on what type of pigments I might try?

Do they sell or have any of you made the Chris-Craft Vermilion from the late '50's?

Troy, yes that has been formulated, but you will have to get hold of Mike. I was just thinking about Vermilion looking at the original cabinetry under the dash of this '58 21' Continental in the shop. A weird color - similar to regular 'red mahogany' yet somehow pinker/orange-er. BTW- got the engine box from your buddy there in Maine - working on it now, thanks.

Tom, the blonde would be the tricky one to formulate at home. Easier just to buy it from Mike as long as he is selling it. I formulated the prewar covering board mix everyone liked for Dave Jerome a few years ago when he was working on Paul Harrison's barrelback. It is just 3 parts walnut (stock Wood Kote color) to 1 part black (another stock Wood Kote color). This is an overstain meant to go over your red hull stain that has dried at least overnight. This is just a tad darker than the postwar technique Dan Nelson pioneered by using straight walnut Wood Kote over the red hull stain on the covering boards. I know Mike Mayer likes the look of straight black over red, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Staining is a highly subjective thing. One guy can say a color is "right" but that same mix on a different species or just a dark piece of wood can make a world of difference.

Thanks Brian! I would love to just get them from Susan but I havent had any success.
How do I reach Susan? I have tried the number (s) several times and it says not in service!
Last time I talked to her in early December I ordered 6 cans and she said she will send them but nothing came.

You are right about subjectivity. I mix until the customer is satisfied. The "blonde" colors on Capri's etc. have always been a crapshoot. I think I have seen maybe 3 boats done in the original "blonde" but its not at all the yellow you see now. The yellow comes from aging of course, and numerous coats of varnish but no one wants the original blonde on a refinish job.

Thanks Brian! Now I will be trying to reach Susan, just like Tom has been. Mom's Continental has gotten much darker over the years, but my brother and his wife are doing one and they want to use the original Vermilion.

I talked with her, she decided to stop providing stains. She was going to forward my information to a boat restoration shop that was going to take over and provide them, but was never contacted. I was unable to get a direct contact number or find out the name of the shop.

I have spoken with both Susan and SuperF to take over the stain supply. Apparently the arrangement they had with Dave wasn't Super Great because when they mixed the colors there was a lot of waste. They're working on a new program for me. As soon as this happens I'll get the word out.

For what its worth, Century used a similar if not exact color as CC vermillion on the Roan and perhaps other models. Maybe the Century community can help.

Thanks M-Fine....I'll run that past my legal team and marketing and see what they say. There may be a liability issue, though. Staining under the influence is probably not a great idea.

The only stain I've used on my CC is Interlux CC red paste filler stain. I'm generally happy with it. Is the gel stain better? Should I switch? What do you guys like about the gel stain?

Joanroy,
Like you, I only used is Interlux but I tried this about 5 years ago and I dont want to go back. Main reason is ease of use and lot less waste. There is no mixing, just wipe on out of the can and wipe off. Also, with paste you have to be so careful you use the exact amount of thinner when you mix it or you get variations in the stain color. Not so with this.
I will say that this does not "fill" as much but with the number of coats of varnish we put on it is irrelevant. CC used only 5 coats at the factory so they had to fill as much as possible before varnishing.
I use it then let it cure for a couple days then use CPES which helps fill it. After that cures I lightly sand with 320 to remove the fibers that come up, then varnish away. Be sure the stain is gassed out before CPES or it will dissolve it some, just like filler stain.
