Tempo Fuel Filter Cartridge to Match Mount

Post by Riviera Wish » Wed Apr 26, 2017 5:06 pm

Would like some assistance in selecting the correct filter cartridge for my Tempo fuel filter. I thought all the fuel filter cartridges were the same. Wrong! I ordered and received a Tempo filter cartridge P/N MF10-170110 but the threads on the cartridge where it spins-on were much larger (OD About 3/4") than the threads on the filter mount. There are two additional filter cartridges available from Tempo, P/N MF11-170100 and P/N MF12-170090. Can anyone tell me the correct cartridge that mates to the mount shown in the picture? The OD on the treads of the filter mount are about 11/16". Appreciate any guidance since I would not like to 'trial and error' the correct cartridge.
Thanks

Tempo is out of business. You want the short Mecrusier style fuel filter. The one you got is for the Crusader engines. Sierra 18-7944 is the one you want.

If the 7944 is to tall, use 7945. Same fit, just shorter.

I am not at all familiar with this set up, but am I incorrect in thinking that the teflon tape should not be used on gas connections??

Might be permatex. Teflon should not be used on gas (ie natural gas) connections

My thinking is that Teflon tape can be used on GASOLINE connections as long as installer is careful not to allow Teflon tape to get into the flow passage and cause an obstruction. That is the Teflon tape is applied behind the initial threads on the connection.
Gas and natural gas connections require a special (yellow) sealant tape, I believe.

I agree with that....... partially. That would reduce the chance of a small piece of tape breaking off into the fuel system possibly clogging the fuel pump. But, I have also read that the regular teflon tape will degrade with time if it is in contact with gas so it could cause a problem on down the line. I would go with the permatex for gasoline fittings just to be safe.

Any other commenters, or have we highjacked this post enough already?

The big problem with using the tape is when a fitting is removed and reinstalled or another fitting put in its place. Pieces of the tape will be in the threads and the new fitting will push them out in to the tubing. Then they have the chance of getting to the carb and stopping it up.

No sealer required. The canister is sealed via a flat rubber ring against the filter housing.
