Problem varnishing over deck seams

Post by JesusVilla90 » Wed Jul 05, 2017 11:06 pm

We are applying the first of three final coats of varnish on the deck. The varnish seems to puddle up in the deck seams. Any advice would be appreciated. Epifanes high gloss clear varnish. Full strength not thinned. Seams are the one part boat life.

Make sure the Boatlife caulk is cured well and give it a light sanding.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

Give the seams themselves a light sanding? I have red scotch bright and some various grits of sand paper. What would you recommend?

The Scotchbrite may work. You just have to rough it up a little so the varnish gets a "bite". It appears the caulking is too smooth so the varnish seemed to float on it.

Came do to the root of my problem another novice lesson learned. I ordered the wrong version of boat life life caulk. The tube looks identical. But I ordered boatlife 1170 when I needed to get boatlife 1033. 1170 is polyurethane/silicone caulk. Live and you learn. So I just started to remove the seams.
