Original Stem/Gripe not seated in frame

Framing, planking and fairing. Repair, or reconstruction. If it's hull related, you'll find it here.

Original Stem/Gripe not seated in frame

Post by BigAls57capri » Sun Apr 08, 2018 11:44 am

I am rebuilding a 57 Capri and noticed that the Stem and Gripe is not fully seated in frames 1/2 and 1. I cam making a new stem and gripe and keel. I am concerned that if I fully seat these parts in the frames the overall sheer and hull shape may be compromised. Any ideas on whether I should rebuild in the original non-seated fashion or try to fix. I don't know how to add a picture but its off about one inch.

Wow, an inch gap?
I've seen as much as 1/2" gap here, and that was likely caused by caulking and spreading bottom planks.
Photos would really be helpful here to see what may have caused this.

At this point, the stem and gripe could be re-made deeper to fill the gap, or even shim the frames?
Even if it made this section of the bottom wider, it would not change the location of the chine or sheer.
This section of the bottom is out of the water at speed so would not effect the planing surface farther aft.
Need photos.

After you hit 'reply', and reply your message, you must hit "Attachments" and then hit the tiny, little, "Add files", and then follow the instructions to find and upload the file(s).
Its a Test.
We must learn to pass this Test (It does change often).

OK so this should work. If not maybe the files are too big at 2.2MB?

Yup, its probably too big to attach, I resize mine to less than 1mb to post here.
In my own forum they have to be less than 100kb, which makes them much harder to see.

Right-click on the photo (before attempting to attach) and see if one of the listed options is "resize"?
Maybe one of this Forum's moderators will advise here?

Ya it looks like the pics are too large. I email admin and they pretty much concur. Working on downsizing and will send when I figure out how. Since I downloaded off my iPhone it's a bit more complicated. Off to Colorado for a few days. Thanks for being patient.

Don, you should see pics now. Not as bad as I thought closer to 1/2".

Well.., look closely at those hammer marks, there are no nails there.
I think those hammer marks were the effect of one guy showing another guy that That frame-tie is NOT sound, certainly not solid.
Note that bolt holes appear to be moved or just crushed under the head?
The forward lift ring hardware attaches to that, meaning that that piece of wood will have to hold 1/2 the weight of the entire boat.

Since that piece obviously has to be replaced, make the new one tall enough to properly seat the gripe.

I ALWAYS replace lift ring frames with new White Oak and new Bronze bolts.

The other photo looks like a 1/8" shim, rubbered in, will do?

OK sounds good. I will also check my heights of the chine and the keel/gripe again although I don't think they have moved. The original screws were in the very lower part of the gripe. Thanks for all your help. That's a nice piece of work in the pic you sent. I'm in Wisconsin by the way.
