1939 cc barrelback minor dock damage to wood

Post by Markhondru » Sun Aug 19, 2018 8:11 pm

Bumped the rear of a dock today in windy conditions parking. Scraped about 2-2 inch sections from the rear of one of my mahogany panels. Took off the varnish down to the wood fibers. Not deep enough for filler I think but drives me nuts looking at it. Guess it needs sanded and revarnished. Any advice of who can do this? Was thinking furniture medic type company as no wood boat specialists in western md. Maybe I could do it myself if it needs just a 400 grit wet sand and revarnished. Thanks Mark

You can fix this yourself. If there is bare wood in the gouge, apply the correct stain. Just dab it in with a small artist brush and wipe off excess. Let dry. Now apply super glue into the gouge. Try not to get any on the area around the gouge. You might mask off with blue tape. Let superglue dry and repeat until the area is level or slightly higher than surrounding area. Block sand with 400 and apply a little varnish. Now block up to 2000 grit and then buff. This would probably be easier with the boat on the trailer.

Also you can purchase an accelerant spray for the super glue that will dry it almost instantly and help prevent running.

This is a video from Antique Boat Center. They sell the superglue and accelerant on their website in the classified section under materials.
