Self bailer
Isn't there supposed to be a small hole at the top of the casting to prevent siphoning when the boat is stopped? If so how large should it be?
Re: Self bailer
Any of the self-bailers I have seen have a hole at the top of the loop. Looks a bit less than 1/8" but I never measured it.

Re: Self bailer
That's what I thought but I ran across someone who insists that there is no hole. Maybe they initially didn't have holes and later changed when a few boats sank. I don't know how old the boat is.

Re: Self bailer
Yes, they should have a hole right at the top. It acts as a siphon break. It's pretty small, never measured either. Should be checked periodically to make sure the hole is clear.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.
Re: Self bailer
Someone said that they didn't have the siphon break hole on pre war boats.
Re: Self bailer
Are most people leaving the self bailer on the boat or removing them and plugging the hole. Do they work well?

Re: Self bailer
Depends who you talk to. I've always had good luck w/ them. They work well IMO.

Re: Self bailer
1/16". If you plug it and it is siphoning when you stop moving it starts filling the boat up. Been there
