6 volt blower update?

Postby Theurkauf » Tue Dec 27, 2011 10:33 am

I'd like to install a bilge blower on a 17 ft sportsman with an original 6 volt electrical system. I've read the earlier posts on 6 volt bowers, but it seems like there was no real resolution to those discussions. What are people currently running 6 volt systems using for blowers? Is there a source for 6 volt blowers (I haven't found one)? 12 volt blowers, voltage doublers?? I'd love to know what systems that are in place and working.

Thanks for the tip, but the blower in the e-bay auction looks pretty dicey to me. Those frayed wires don't inspire confidence! This is a key safety item, and was not original equipment, so I'm hoping for a reliable modern replacement.

Antique boat connection lists a 3 inch blower and they state "Made for 12 volt system but will also work on 6 volt system."

Has anyone out there tried this?

I imagine a 12v blower will just turn a little slower on 6v. I don't know about any excess current draw. That Ebay blower would probably be fine w/ a little re-wire but it might be a little wonky to fashion to one of the vent tubes since you probably don't want to cut a hole in your hullside.

If a 12 volt blower is used on a 6 volt system you will have half the current compared with a similar 6 volt blower. It will as was suggested in a previous post run slower. If its run constantly it may run hotter, and may not hold up. If its just used to air out the motor area for a few minutes prior to starting it will probably work fine.
