Yeah..., You're just better off letting "trim" stuff drain excess moisture.
No need to "seal" that, it could hold in moisture?

It's good that you are obviously learning the "guts" of your engine systems, and sharing them here! (JS knows the parts available.., JG can advise on how they are installed). Just bear in mind, that the aforementioned engine technology, is like the flat-head, tractor engines your grandfather might h...

Re: Hull Construction
Wow.., I'm expecting this current crew to come up with some answers? The earliest CC inner bottom, in plywood (Doug Fir) that I've ever seen, was a 1953, CC, 17-Sportsman. I believe this was a 'transitional' boat because we found ALL BRASS screws and bolts, on one side of the boat, and ALL BRONZE sc...

Re: Hull Year vs year on boat title
Listen to Jim G, like the automobile production, around Aug/Sept they were 'next year's' model. They didn't just build XXX-number of boats, and hoped they would sell? They took orders from the CC Catalogs at their local marina, and built in 12-20-hull 'runs'. That's one reason there are hardware, et...

Grind down the coatings on any 'original' interior framework and decide for yourself. Some were greenish, some bluish...., The way Chris Smith explained this to me in the early 90's was; 'Many more cruisers were produced, so left-over white hull paint, and apparently some other colors, were dumped i...

In the 'hull construction' forum, May 30, you asked about these opening seams. I did my best to explain how the products work and postulated that maybe you weren't controlling humidity well in your shop, and you admitted a 3-month delay before coating with the barrier coat primer, and that's probabl...

Re: open seams in new 5200 Bottom
My guess is that change in your shop's humidity levels allowed the planks to shrink? CPES is a semi-permeable membrane, not a moisture barrier coat, it does slow, but not stop, moisture movement. It's main job is to penetrate and fill 'abnormal porosity' like open grain and rot spore tendrils. It's ...

Re: Constellation Bottom Repair - New Member In Need Of Reassembly Advice!!!
Since he is 'repairing small sections' at the stem and garboards, I recommended that he stay with the original boatyard bedding compound and canvas so that it moved like the other 90% of the bottom he is not re-planking. 5200 would also work but might make stiffer areas where used. Where the origina...

I just went back to my shop to retrieve the MM 'Essential Guide' and that photo of '43' Constellation: 1965', doesn't show if there is, or is not, a raised bulwark? It does, however, list 'Deck color' as "White Vinyl". If this vinyl needs replacement, you had best do this before rubbering anything t...

Re: Installing new cap rails
I'm a bit confused by your use of the term "Cap Rail"? A Cap Rail is generally a "CAP" to a raised bulwark, 2" or more above the deck. A "Toe-Rail" mounts directly to the deck. If you can post a photo of your original installations, perhaps I can help with the least messy way to go about the new ins...

Re: Removal of a broken engine plate drive screw
Hey, If it's even possible to 'break' a 3/16" long rivet, what would be left is tiny. If you are going to try to 'drill' it out, you should use a "Reverse-cut" drill bit, so that it unscrews the super-tiny bit of the rivet left, by its own threaded rings. Be VERY careful to not drill into the cast i...

Re: Original Stem/Gripe not seated in frame
Wow, an inch gap? I've seen as much as 1/2" gap here, and that was likely caused by caulking and spreading bottom planks. Photos would really be helpful here to see what may have caused this. At this point, the stem and gripe could be re-made deeper to fill the gap, or even shim the frames? Even if ...

Mike's got it, exactly what I do. I place a dozen tubes in the furnace outflow, or in the past, put a dozen tubes in the shop sink full of HOT water for an hour or two. I use pneumatic guns and without a tip can empty a tube in 3-seconds. Warm and liquid, its also much easier to trowel and likely ge...

Re: Removal of a broken engine plate drive screw
Actually, I don't know these to be hard, but quite soft 'Rivets'. These are generally 1/4" to 3/16" long and hammered into place. It is quite easy to just pry this plate off of the manifold if you are careful not to bend the corners of the brass plate. They can't be re-used because the spiral ribs a...

3M-5200 and no problems. I would still use fasteners at ends and where stanchions might need support, also where a fastener is necessary to pull it down tight to spooge the rubber. What I would do is shape and fit them, placing whatever minimal screws are needed, then remove them and stain and varni...

Yes, I did try this ONCE! This was 1998(?) when tubes were $6.05 (20-cases) and the pails were $270? I had three bottoms ready to go before I opened anything. Framework all done and sealed, inner bottoms installed and sealed, planks steam bent and dry-fit with locator screws. I had a crew of 3. What...

I always start by fitting the curves at the bow, along the keel, these might need trimming to get the shape right. Use your old planks to mark where each started along the gripe. I cut out new plank 'blanks' a bit longer than simply tracing to make up for any sliding forward due to trimming to fit t...

Yeah well, I've been crawling in, under, and around wooden boats since 1971. I'm old and sore. I do fit the inner bottom slats as tightly as I can but still bedded in rubber at the edges as well. I've learned a lot since I first wrote book one in 1995, these photos show how I do it now. I use temporary hex-washer head screws and remove them all after the rubber sets. The outer planks should h...
