Re: KLC engine box dimensions
Hi Scott...I have an original '57 17' Sportsman in storage for a client at the moment. Here are a couple pics and the dimensions I got. There is a slight variance (1/4") in the dimension from the floor to the top on the front and the back. Probably the cushion on top compressed....

Re: 1959 CC Ski 18'
I have a 1960 SBC FWF 283 with the Owens conversion. I run two senders with one gauge and a SPDT toggle switch behind the dash under the instrument. Works great. The port banks on those were known to run hot. I have only had problems when we are cruising at idle. If it gets hot I put it in neutral a...

Empty Boat Trailer on East Coast
I have an empty "wishbone" trailer in the Finger Lakes of NY that needs to come home to Portland, Oregon. It was built to carry a 26' Hacker Craft. If anyone needs to get a trailer-less boat from the East coast to the West coast (or close)...have I got a deal for you!!!

Thanks M-Fine....I'll run that past my legal team and marketing and see what they say. There may be a liability issue, though. Staining under the influence is probably not a great idea.

Re: Dave Jerome's gel stain
I have spoken with both Susan and SuperF to take over the stain supply. Apparently the arrangement they had with Dave wasn't Super Great because when they mixed the colors there was a lot of waste. They're working on a new program for me. As soon as this happens I'll get the word out. MikeM @ Lake O...

Re: where to find info about my 1953 sportsman deluxe
Congrats on the SOB! I'm the guy that sold it out of the Vancouver WA garage a few years back. That is the quintessential "user" boat, as it still has so much of it's original patina and charm and has been well used over the past several years. The 18' Sportsman is nearly the perfect boat....not too...

Re: Boat Shipping
I have had good luck with visquine (heavy plastic from Home Depot) stretched over the boat and stapled under the trailer bunks. Duct tape works well to seal the seams. I've done this twice with absolutely no problems. The first time was a trip from NC to OR with a triple. I have also shrunk wrap a w...

Re: Gell stain promotes peeling?
I have been using Dave's gel stain for years. I have also experienced the "delam" of varnish when drilling for hardware. I used to use Pettit sanding sealer after letting the stain dry for a day or two. I stopped using the Pettit and now just use thinned Epiphanes as sealer and proceed to varnish wi...

Sooo, for the people in the back of the room....we're draining the block first to release water and hopefully expel any "gunk" in the cooling system and then filling with anti freeze to protect the block and components, right? I used to do that but found myself getting less interested and less good ...

Re: Riviera Shrunken Deck Planks
Here's my 2 cents. Route out the "live seam" to an even ( and straight) 3/16", 1/4" if you have to. Then glue in a 3/16" strip being careful to match wood tone as closely as possible. From there you can just leave it that way or route the repair out to proper seam width. Having the seams off by just...

I have struggled with bubbles, too, over the years. Mostly on the sides and transom, just like you. I ...

Actually, I think all of those boats are "Miss Lisa", Matt Byrnes overly featured GW, in various lengths and stages of restoration.

Matt,
Sometimes if I stand up too fast after I've been looking at boat buzz I see spots. I can't click at them but sometimes I try to reach out and touch them, but I don't think they're there. When you're done helping John do you think you can help me?

Re: Too much stain applied on topsides
I do not use filler with Jeld stain. In my experience, after a few coats of varnish the boat looks the same as it did when I used the filler stain. I have thought about using a clear filler before I stain but it just seams like a ton of work for not a whole lot of return, IMHO. Regarding UV's....I'm...

Either hire a striper (Yes, I said striper with one P) or tape off each side of the seam and paint it with a small brush. Personally, if I have less than perfect seams I let my "sign guy" do it. He makes it look easy and he enjoys it. He does it at the end of the project when the transom art and reg...

Re: Too much stain applied on topsides
Ok.....I'm going to say it. Bad stain will haunt you for the rest of your woody life. If it doesn't look right now it's only going to get worse (and harder to sand off) with more varnish. Cut your losses, sand it off and start over. This time I suggest Jeld Stain. There is a source on the west coast...

Finish fairing the boat. When you've got it perfectly fair and smooth then bleach it. After you bleach it you should lightly sand it to remove any raised grain. Then stain it. Then seal it. After you seal it look at the planks for color uniformity. If you have a couple light planks tape them off and...

It sounds like the boat is varnished and you're looking for advice on how to fill the holes without refinishing the whole boat. If this is true, I have had success filling hardware holes on a finished boat by using epoxy colored with stain. Using a toothpick (or something) I slowly and patiently fil...
