Spining Screws
I have been tightening and replacing fasteners this PM on a '47 CC Sportsman. The seats have a pass-through to the stern. I found that the port side of the inside support is a bit wobbly, so I attempted to tighten the screws at the base of the support to no avail. They turn freely in both directions...

Three's a Crowd
I installed a new starter motor on my KLC this fall. The starter is great and spins the engine better, but the positive terminal post barely accommodates the three wires on it. It's holding on by three threads on the nut. One good pothole or wave and it may pop off. Not good. In pondering a ...

Bottom Paint on an 18' Sportsman
I am at my wits end trying to figure out how to raise to rear of the boat enough to finish a bottom paint job. Everthing's done but where the two stringers planks are. I have considered renting an engine lift and hoisting it about five inches; just enough to use a mini roller. I would use the stern ...

Re: Building A Bomb?
OK OK OK! (a la Joe Pesci) I'm off to the marine store for a bucketload of proper connectors and some fresh wire. Ready for a weekend of contortions and cramps. The waterways and boat ramps around here are packed this weekend anyway. After springing for the fume detector, why not finish the job with...

Building A Bomb?
On a recent ACBS bulletin concerning the Keuka Lake incident, the author made a blanket statement that anyone using wire nuts in a boat was "building a bomb." Really? These connectors were in my boat when I bought it and I have used them myself. I wish to add here that I do not twist the wires toget...

Gas Fume Detector Installation
After the unfortunate event at Keuka Lake I bought a Xintex fume detector. I have an 1947 18' delux sportsman. Where do you all think the best spot for the detection unit is for this boat? I initially thought the carb side would be best but the installation instructions recommend avoiding the manifo...

Re: Mystery Aliment bedevils my KLC
I have solved part of the mystery. In the process of replacing the fuel filter, I dumped the contents of the old filter into a coffee can. At first the gas appeared to have mixed with leftover coffee grounds, but spose tells me that she washed the can out before giving it to me. What a mess! I bough...

My generator is a 12 volt rebuilt unit on a three wire external regulator.
My distributor has electronic spark. I know that low voltage would stop the spark and the engine, but then why would it restart
and run a few moments later?

Mystery Aliment bedevils my KLC
My engine has been starting and running well all season. We arrived at Clayton, and took her out for a cruise. Fifteen or twenty minutes into the ride the engine looses rpms and stops. I check the engine; no leaks, no fallen wires, no smells, and plenty gas in the bowl. I push the starter and it fir...

Re: Awful Discovery, a Crappy 90's Restoration Job
The topsides were done long before I bought the boat. I don't think the folks who sold it to me had any idea about these fasteners. The corrosion shows up as either a pround bung or a blackening of the wood around the bung, like a miniature solar eclipse. Shaeaffer Beer is now a division of Stroh's,...

Awful Discovery, a Crappy 90's Restoration Job
I finally decided to fix some proud bungs on my vessel. I was disgusted to see that whoever refastened the topside planks years ago, supposedly a "reputable" shop in the Lake Tahoe area, used some stainless steel fasteners, but mostly bugle head sheetrock screws! These things are the lowest form of ...

One Layer or Two?
We are making a travel cover for our 18' C Sportsman. We have seen covers that are one layer, made of non-marking material on the inside and water resistant material on the outside. Also we see the two layer approach, with each fabric serving a distinct function.
Any ideas on which works the best?

Re: Buffing a Varnished Finish
Phil has a photo of my boat being towed to the haul-out ramp at the SML show. I'm not sure I'll take her out again until I figure out what's going on with the twin carbs from Hell. The boat started and ran until I turned towards the ramp, then conked out. I guess she did not want to leave SML.

Buffing a Varnished Finish
I returned from the SML show with some white dock scuff marks. I use a auto style heavy electric buffer, a 3M waffle pad and 3M Finnese It compound. It did a great job of removing the scuffs; so much so that I'm tempted to do the whole boat. Is this a good idea, as I think that buffing may remove a ...

Re: 21 Days Off, Now Won't Start
OK, I went up to East Penn and got a new battery. Gave it a shot of Pyrol and it started right up and ran perfectly. Later, I tried to start it again without the Pyrol, but nothing doing. Also, still only 10.9 volts at the coil[engine not running.]

21 Days Off, Now Won't Start
My boat has sat in the driveway for 21 days due to unavoidable circumstances. I last ran it to flush out the Chesapeake water and check on some work I did to the lead carb [KFL engine.] It ran fine then. Now I go to start it, and I don't even get a cough or sputter. I charged up the battery, still n...

Stuff It: or Not?
Upon returning from the Hartwell Show (which was amazing!), I opened up my stuffing box to determine why I have a small but annoying leak. I separated the two halves to find that there's packing on both sides of the box. I believe that there should only be stuffing on the female side, but the male s...

Using a Resort's Boat Lift
We will be staying at a lakeside resort in Minnesota on the Whitefish chain of lakes this June. In making the arrangements, I noticed that the resort had covered slips with boatlifts. I've never used a boatlift, and thought this would be the life! From what I can see in the photos however, it looks ...

Re: To Flush, or Pull the Plug
My engine is a KFL. I have pulled the plug that is to the left of the water pump, the bottom grease cup of the water pump, any hoses in the rear of the engine, and of course the manifold. Have I missed any hiding places? I have vacuumed up about 3/4 of a gallon of water from the bilge.

To Flush, or Pull the Plug
I am having a crack on my exhaust manifold repaired this winter, so flushing the block and filling with antifreeze was not an option. So I have drained everywhere the water might hide. Most came out of the manifold. My question is, why not do this every winter? Is there a reason to trust the antifre...

kfl 2 001.JPG Upon further observation, it turns out that the existing breather pipe was soldered, not welded. Re: Smelly KFL Breather Pipe
Jim and Pete, many thanks for the info. I think I misspoke when I said exhaust smell, it is more of an oily aroma. I have checked for exhaust leaks earlier and found none. Looking at the engine pictures, what is the cigar shaped item projecting from the valve cover? Do I need a flame arrestor and a ...

Jim, yes someone put a lot of effort into this pipe, but then again Dr. Frankenstien put a lot of effort into his project too. Smelly KFL Breather Pipe
For some reason known only to a previous restorer, the breather pipe on my KFL goes from the valve cover up to what looks like an intake air filter. All the other engine pictures I have seen on this site and elsewhere show this pipe as either connected to the intake manifold via a PCV valve or endin...

Dock Scuff Marks
After a weeklong stay at Rangley Lake in Maine, I notice a few white scuff marks on the varnish as a result of docking in windy conditions (or poor seamanship ).
