Re: Recommended KBL Engine Oil
Good point that synthetics are "too slippery" for the reverse gear operation. Since I do not run any filter my best bet would be to run a non-detergent oil if I understand the comments correctly. Some oils contain ZDDP in varying amounts; I understand that 1200ppm is required for the old flat head e...

Recommended KBL Engine Oil
It has been several years since I researched this topic; at that time ,several years ago, I selected Chevron Delo 400 SAE 30 as the choice for my KBL engine. Now in researching the best engine oil for the old flat head Chris Craft engines I am not able to verify that Chevron Delo is a good selection...

Re: Propeller
I am far from an expert on propeller selection but I think I can make a contribution to the selection. The selected propeller should run at the maximum rated horsepower RPM of the engine at wide-open throttle. Diameter of the propeller should be the maximum allowable with proper tip clearance; for y...

Re: Cleats (small) on '52 Riviera
That is how my cleats look. However, in the photo shown, the cleat appears to be within an inch or two of the SS rub rail. This location would be different than the earlier photos of the 20' Riviera which shows the cleats forward of the windshield and aft of the cockpit to be further inboard, i.e. o...

Re: Cleats (small) on '52 Riviera
Thanks Mike, now that you have 'schooled' me in the use of the photos I see the cleats. It's interesting that they are located inboard on the deck planks; I had thought/assumed the cleats would be more outboard. Your comments on the cleats not being located adjacent to the cockpit and too far aft ar...

Re: Cleats (small) on '52 Riviera
Mike, in an earlier post you indicated that you had 'photos of the cleat locations'. I don't see any cleats in the pictures that you posted on the 20' Riviera. Could you post the photos with the locations of the cleats? Thanks

Re: Cleats (small) on '52 Riviera
Thanks for all of your replies. I have requested photos from Maritime Classics with regard to the location of the cleats. There is a photo in CHRIS-CRAFT BOATS which shows the approximate location of 6 cleats on an 18' Riviera but I don't know if this photo is true to CC production, and it does not ...

Cleats (small) on '52 Riviera
My hull card for '52 Riviera #749 indicates 8 small cleats were provided by the factory. Based on research I assume these cleats were used to retain a boat cover. In this regard, can anyone tell me the pattern for, or a supplier of, the cover that was used on the CC Riviera? Also, where exactly were...

Re: 18' Riviera
FYI The hull card on my 1952 18' Riviera is dated 1/31/52; hull number is 749. So it appears Chris Craft was building in excess of 300 Rivieras per year in the early 1950's.

Re: Hercules MCL starting issues
Based on what you have said the engine valves appear to be closing (compression 90-110 in each cylinder). Valve / engine timing may be an issue (when firing the engine exhausts through the carb, might be firing on the exhaust stroke or when the exhaust valve is partially open); I would check to make...

I have an 18' Riviera of 1952 vintage. Purchased an interior kit from Jack Mayeaux Upholstery and am very happy with the results. I suggest that you call Jack at (503)267-8824. He is very knowledgeable about original Chris Craft upholstery and is easy to talk with; his upholstery work has won many a...

What Insurance is Required?
I am relatively new to the boating world. Have just about completed restoration of a 1952 Riviera and I am wondering what insurance is required for the tow vehicle / car (if any in addition to normal policy), trailer, and boat. Ituitively it seems that an insurance company is taking on more risk if ...

Refinishing Old Varnish Surface
I am attempting to refinish a year old Interlux Schooner 96 varnished sides on my '52 Riviera. Some areas of the sides had gone dull (sucked up) and a re-coat was in order. I had 'blocked the sides with 320 grit sandpaper before reading the table on the Schooner 96 can which says "Sand old finish th...

Re: KLC long-block expectations
Very interesting question. With an OHV engine you would not get the heads, valves, etc. with a "long block". In the case of a 'K' engine the valves are IN the block. It seems to me the only real answer to the question is the answer the supplier of the long block gives. Will be interested in viewing ...

Riviera Engine Space Floor
Restoring a 1952 Riviera and have a few questions about the floor boards in the engine space: How long are the floor boards? Do the floor boards butt-up against the stringers? Do the engine space vent tubes penetrate the floor boards? Are the floor boards notched for the vent air flow? Are the floor...

Re: Aqua Meter (speedometer) Disassembly
While the needle may unscrew from the shaft I must admit that the small tool(s) necessary to do the job are not in my possession. Further as I looked at the gauge and the finesse required to do the job I 'chickened out'. I was afraid I would do damage to the gauge while attempting to remove the need...

Re: Aqua Meter (speedometer) Disassembly
That makes some sense. The clock hand pullers all seem to have a center drive pin that is larger than the hole in the center of the needle, i.e. they would not apply force to the shaft while pulling on the needle. The hole in the center of the needle appears to be about 5 to 10 thousandths of an inc...

Re: Tempo Fuel Filter Cartridge to Match Mount
My thinking is that Teflon tape can be used on GASOLINE connections as long as installer is careful not to allow Teflon tape to get into the flow passage and cause an obstruction. That is the Teflon tape is applied behind the initial threads on the connection. Gas and natural gas connections require...
