283 Chris Craft exhaust logs
Hi All, I am assembling a flywheel forward Chris Craft 283. I have been told that the Barr replacement exhaust manifolds won't work because of an internal casting change and that Osco manifolds are no longer available. I have been also told that original Chris Craft log manifolds with casting dates ...

Re: 1937 Chris Craft 19' Custom Runabout Bottom Woes
Hi, My dash has been modified so is not original. As to the Banjo steering wheel would I would be happy to trade you the one on my boat. Yes it is original on a 37 model. As to bilge pumps I would install one in the stern and on in the bow with their own outlet. The most common way for a boat to sin...

Re: 1937 Chris Craft 19' Custom Runabout Bottom Woes
Hi I have the identical 1937 19 ft custom. I wish my grand father had left me one as nice as yours since mine is a total pattern boat. Looking at your pictures it appears that there is some caulking in the seams. You could put a product called slick seam in the gaps of your bottom planks before lunc...

Hi. By all means Curt and Rob are great resources and Curt lives only a few miles rom you. When I met Curt I was working at a Ford dealer as a technician and had virtually no boat building experience. I am now retired and working on my forth total restoration with another stashed away for when then ...

Re: Gas tank restorayion
I have had success cleaning usable tanks by putting a gallon of methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) in the tank along with a large pack of daisy rifle BB's. 1,000 or so. Put a lid on the tank and drive around with it in the back of an vehicle for at least a week.

Re: Engine Oil - What Do We Use
Having recently had a reputable Machine Shop build a 283 for a project. The shop required Valvoline Racing oil 20-50 in the silver bottle. Fortunately it is available over the counter at NAPA stores at least in the state of Washington. Valvoline also supplies it in 30 weight. It retails for about $6...

Re: Quickest way to replace the original engine...
The quickest way to get back on the water is to replace the long block with a small journal 283 or 327. pre 1968 everything will bolt together with no modifications. I would start with a different block and heads because of your water issue. If you go with a 350 you will have to do some extensive gr...

Re: Crate 350 engine in a '56 Continental 18'
Hi, I have put together several updated 283 conversions. If you want it to look original you need to use a pre 1968 block. All 350,s have different crankcase ventalation. A small journal 327 from 62 to 67 will bolt together with no modifications other than drilling and tapping the crankshaft. A wind...

Several Years ago Dick Dow and I recanvased the roof of my 1941 34 ft Deluxe Enclosed Chris Craft in Seattle. I purshased the canvas from Ballard canvas and it is about the weight of a pair of Levi jeans. I sanded and sealed the roof and then put down irish felt using stainles stapples give it some ...

Re: V-belts for CC 283 Gen/water pump
NAPA auto parts stores can provide them. They are called a fractional horsepower belt. Take your old belt to the parts store to have them measure the length. Publish the belt# when you them. Good luck.

Re: repower 283 w 350
I have a 350 truck engine in my 1941 34 ft Deluxe Enclosed Cruiser with a 283 conversion. This allows use of original gauges and controls. I used a 350Q oil pan but did have to do some redrilling and taping on the pan, heads and crankshaft for oil to the manual 2XE transmission. Crankcase ventilatio...
