Re: 1970 ski boat

Are you prepared for the time and expense to restore the CC? If the floor is soft, you may need to clean out water logged floatations foam and replace it. Plus, you already know about engine work and the seat. I would plan on that project costing more than the boat will be worth. Go in to it as a la...

If you totally drained the fuel system (good) it may take a bit to get it to prime depending on how it is configured.

Re: My 283 replaced by 350 ???

A friend of mine had issues with the heads not having holes drilled and taped for the marine accessories. Tom The bow end of the head needs to be drilled and tapped for the water exit on a 283 style cooling setup. It is not a difficult task for a competent engine shop. There shouldn't be a need for...

You won't necessarily need a new prop. A modern build 350 will have more power, but it can also safely spin a few hundred rpm faster than the old 283 builds.

Re: Epoxy bottoms

I want the outer planks to soak up and swell in the water and shrink up and dry on the hard. The dynel just makes it leak proof while the swelling take place. I'm in salt water so no rot can grow when submersed and if rapid drying can take place after haul the planks should outlast the fasteners. N...

Re: Epoxy bottoms

The big question is what would your system potentially give you that a 5200 system would not? What you propose does not look any quicker or cheaper, and I don't see how it would improve ride, longevity, water tightness or anything that comes to mind. If you are thinking up a solution in search of a ...

I believe there are, but keep in mind that those bottoms were not meant to last decades. At the time they were expecting owners would replace the boat with a new better model.

Re: Epoxy bottoms

Not all epoxy products are the same. In the case of the Dannenberg 5200 bottom, the product used is CPES, which despite the name, does not produced a completely waterproof seal. My understanding is that it slows water penetration and also strengthens the wood fibers so there is much less swelling an...

Re: Epoxy bottoms

A 5200 bottom does not completely encapsulate the wood so it can absorb moisture and also dry. The use of CPES may slow this down some, but it will still breath. It also remains more flexible. A 5200 bottom is for the most part a traditional bottom where the cloth between layers has been replaced wi...

Re: Rebuild or Replace a 283 R15 Fuel Pump Model # 4926?

Jim, thank you for your trouble shooting tips. I'll check out all the possible solutions to my stalling problem before I switch off my pumps. The reason I think it may be related to a vapor locking problem is due to the fact that the engine won't restart until it's allowed to sit for ten minutes or...

Re: Rebuild or Replace a 283 R15 Fuel Pump Model # 4926?

I definitely have the problem of dry float bowls after sitting for 4 days. I just crank till I have fuel and then my engines start right up. The extra cranking is tough on the starter I suppose but it lubs up the engine before it starts which is not all bad. I recently read an article that said Car...

Re: Rebuild or Replace a 283 R15 Fuel Pump Model # 4926?

To be clear, my comments on the electric pump solving issues only relates to solving the fuel evaporating out of the carb issue, and help reducing vapor lock (if not mounted on near heat and the fuel line is protected). If those are not the causes of your problem, I can't promise a new pump will do ...

Re: Rebuild or Replace a 283 R15 Fuel Pump Model # 4926?

Will electric fuel pumps totally eliminate the possibility of vapor lock problems, and if so, what brand marinized electric pump is recommended? I won't say totally, but if you mount the pump away from the engine and heat, closer to the fuel tank, it should help a lot. You still need to make sure t...

Re: Rebuild or Replace a 283 R15 Fuel Pump Model # 4926?

It is not just ethanol that boils off. Even modern ethanol free gas is more volatile than it was in the past. The cutoff and pump are two seperate items. The cutoff is small and can be feed on where the small oil port is for the oil pressure gauge. For the pump, you are looking for one that is regul...

Re: Rebuild or Replace a 283 R15 Fuel Pump Model # 4926?

My opinion is that the old mechanical fuel pumps are less reliable and less safe. As such, I prefer a low pressure (not for fuel injection) electric pump and an oil pressure cutoff safety switch. Modern fuel, with or without ethanol, evaporates faster and can make it hard to start after a boat sits ...

Re: Re - Building Transom

John, I need to also disagree with you. 5200 remains flexible which is why it is good for certain tasks like bottom planks. It is a very poor choice for laminating multiple thin(er) pieces of wood into a single structural member. A properly laminated piece will be much stronger than one that is stea...

I am pretty sure the can on the right is the proper color for the V8 engines but would not be exactly correct for a post war K. There was a Brass Bell article on this a couple years ago. Try searching the archive for it.

Manufacturer recommendations for our boats are 50-90+ years out of date. Oils have changed quite a bit just in the last 10 years let alone 50, so what was best, or even just good enough back then may not be a good choice today.

Whether 54 pages or 96 pages the "BrassBell" should be a break even or profit center for the club. The dues should NOT pay for the magazine. It has to support itself through revenues from advertising, and that constitutes display and classified (Trading Dock). That is simply not a reasonable expect...
