Re: Correct Burgee

Welcome Les, to the Boat Buzz. In the Essential guide the photo is what I assume is one of the earlier model which has the straight style burgee with the postwar script. From what I understand the runabouts had red burgees and the cruisers were blue.

Re: 1958 Sea Skiff hull number

Yes, that is it. The 26 indicates the length, the SF I assume stands for Skiff, and the 119 is the production sequence number. According to the guide they produced 204 hulls between 1957-1959.

Re: 1958 Sea Skiff hull number

Nice looking boat there! You might find the hull number on the edge of an engine hatch, or stamped on the bottom edge of the cabin door. Pull off any interior wood trim pieces and look on the back.

Re: Slipping forward gear and not-engaging reverse gear

Operators Manual for 4 & 6 Cylinder Engines (dragged).pdf
I hope this helps. The adjustment for forward clutch discs and the reverse band are separate and one shouldn’t effect the other. I suppose if the reverse band is too tight it could cause drag on the fwd discs.

Re: Leaky bottom

It doesn’t sound like you have an alarming amount of water coming in. As far as the rot spot goes, I can’t say without looking, how involved that repair might be.
In the long term, a 5200 bottom would give you many years of service.

Re: Leaky bottom

Have you left it in the water for any length of time? It can take 2 or more days to soak up completely. Even after that it isn’t unusual to see some water after running, as flexing can cause some leaking. Does she have the original bottom or older replacement? That’s a nice model boat there, probabl...

I have not seen the logo applied other than in line. I would post a picture of my Sedan w/ Flybridge, but I think the file is too big. Not tech savvy enough to make it smaller

Re: KL Engine Running Hot

It could also have some mud and rust blocking the water jacket too. It’s best to remove the manifold and take of the cap and exhaust elbow off, run a coat hanger thru and flush with water.
I would start with the water pump first. If it has a rubber impeller, it could be worn or missing some vanes.

Re: KL stalling issue

I don’t know if I’m helping but in most cases a rule of thumb is, if it kinda sputters and stumbles then dies, I would look towards a fuel problem. If it just shuts down like someone turned off the ignition, it’s usually an electrical issue. :? Seems like you may have ruled out the ignition parts. W...

Re: Hercules KFL engine noise, help appreciated

I understand the clearance problem What I saw in the video looked very familiar, I have a '56 Sedan 28'. When you get this apart you might find that what you have there is repairable. I don't know right off hand how that pulley is held in place, it could be welded.

Re: Hercules KFL engine noise, help appreciated

Pulling the flywheel is the next course of action. Not an easy task right up against the bulkhead like that.
By the way, what boat are you working on there, Sedan Cruiser?

Re: Hercules KFL engine noise, help appreciated

Jim, he pulled the generator thinking that may be the noise, the red thing appears to be the label on the belt he left on. The next thing I would do is pull the starter and inspect it to see if the flywheel is rubbing on that somewhere. May end up pulling the flywheel if nothing is scraping on the s...

Sounds like the flywheel is scraping on something, check if the flywheel bolts are tight. Hopefully this is external and not something worse.

Re: Leaking Fuel Pump

Yup, you figured out the worst case there, a break in the fuel line. The pressure switch will stop the electric pump when the engine stalls. Without it, the pump will continue to pump your bilge full of fuel until the ignition switch is turned off. I am a fan of mechanical pumps so, I don’t know the...

Re: Leaking Fuel Pump

If its the only way for now I say go for it but like Jim said do it right with a Marine grade pump and with a oil pressure safety switch. You should never run a mechanical fuel pump with out a oil safety switch to turn off the pump when theirs no oil pressure. I think you mean an electric fuel pump...

Hi, The K’s in my cruiser take 5qts each. I think there were different oil pans which would account for the difference. I could measure one of my sticks for comparison.

Re: Sportsman Bottom Paint Questions

Hi Jon, Welcome to The Buzz. Your soaking practice is a good one. Just make sure you don't put to much water on the inside. Your boat was designed to hold water out, not in. Too much weight may pull fasteners loose. If your boat is going to live on a trailer most of the time, it would best if you co...

You could recaulk but that would be a temporary fix. Removal of the window and rebedding it would, of course, be better.
