I would like to add one thing to my previous comment. With the top snapped to the top of the windshield, you will receive almost no breeze. Some tops have been made with zippered openings above the windshield to let the breeze in but that would also put you back in the sun. While it does not look as...

I just made a top for my 18' utility. I bought a bimini top from Overton's marine and had my upholstery guy cut down the front and put in snaps to snap it to the top of the windshield. I'm in Austin and you can come see it or I can send you a picture. Hope you know about the show on Lake LBJ on Octo...

The best, and maybe only way, is to pull the arm off at the steering gear at the base of the steering wheel. You will probably need a wheel or gear puller to get it off. Then you can turn the steering wheel a little and put the arm back on lightly until you have it where you want it. It might take a...

I have a client that needs a 23' Continental hauled from Cincinnati to Austin, Tx. It has no trailer. Anyone have any ideas?

Assuming you have a "K" engine, it is a right hand rotation motor. Therefore, when you put it in reverse, the stern will go to the left due to the prop walk you mention. Picture, please only in your mind, the propeller rolling across the bottom. The noise you refer to is normal when in reverse. Ther...

I'm not sure if this is what you want but when I replaced my gas tank, I made a new operation. The old one had a large 90 degree fitting. There is a tube going down into the tank and on the outside is the fitting with the shut off valve. The thread size on the tank is big, maybe 1". I'm not going to...

new title
I recently bought a boat and the seller would not help out with the title. I won't go into all the details but I secured a title through a company that specializes in obtaining titles. I used ITS-titles.com, but there are others. They register your boat in a non-title state (AL for one) and then sel...

I have done this type of polishing, but I think you need to go to a higher quality of sandpaper. I don't think Finesse-It will take out 1200 scratches. You should take it up to 2000. I then use a medium polishing compound, followed by a fine compound. Then it is time for the Finesse-It which is fine...

I don't think I have ever seen a Chris Craft runabout that wasn't stained. The stain serves to blend any color differences in the wood together and make the whole boat more even. If you have no stain now, my guess is that a previous owner stripped the boat to bare wood and then applied just the varn...

bilge cleaner
Try getting the bilge damp. Then sprinkle a lot of Tide powdered detergent all over. Let sit for a while. Scrub with a brush and rinse.

The hull card of my 1941 utility calls for blue marble linoleum. Does anyone have a source? I have samples from Tony Lauria in PA but they are solid colors. Thanks

I would think a good welding shop could repair it and then buff it out. I assume it is brass. Some have been chromed. If yours has been, it would have to be redone. To start over, you could find a piece of half round brass stock at a metal supply company and bend it to shape. Drill your holes after ...

Bill, I was trying to look at the hull card that was posted yesterday or today. When I click the thumbnail, I go to a page that has a small box at the top. In the box is a red x (which usually means file not available or something like that) and the picture caption (1957 Sea Skiff or whatever it was...

Al, Thanks for the reply. What is not shown in the picture are the side curtains. They attach to those snaps along the side top edge of the top and then to a row of snaps along the upper edge of the side windshield. My boat clearly shows the row of holes where the snaps used to be. There are also ho...

Navy Top
I have a 1941 18' Deluxe Utility which came originally with the navy top. Of course, it is now missing. The Mariners Museum sent me a drawing which gives me a rough idea of what the frame is like. Does anyone know about these? I think the frame is permanently mounted, but can I put the canvas on or ...

E-Bay boat
I think the seller does not know what he has. It looks like a Holiday or Continental from about 1955. The Olds engine would be a re-power. I have seen them before. A local 23' Continental has a 455 and it moves right along. Olds were very popular with the jet boat guys.

283 water hoses.
I have a 283, flywheel forward, which came with no water hoses from the pump. I have 2 outlets from the pump, an upper and lower fitting on the inside rear of the manifolds, and a fitting on each side of the block right near the manifold fittings. What goes where?

Jeff, First, lets get a few terms straightened out. The covering board is actually the side piece of the deck. The front deck of your boat probably has planks with white deck seams between them. There is a board that runs from the very tip of the bow around the deck planks and all the way to the ste...

I did a bottom with plywood on one of my own boats about ten years ago. The problem lies in that in the forward part of the boat, the shape of the hull requires the plywood to flex two ways which plywood won't do. You have to run strips, usually 6 inches wide, at approximately a 45 degree angle to m...

The Austin show, thanks for asking, is October 20-21 and has moved to lake LBJ, a quite smaller lake but with better facilities. The Friday cruise is probably 30 miles at best. I know you were involved with one of the most extensive restoration projects in recent years, the Little Lady, winner of ev...
