Epifanes Rapidcoat

Has anyone used this product that can give me their assessment? I'm helping a friend work on a wood boat in a remote location and our time is limited. 24 hour wait per coat is not going to work out well for us. This product states you can overcoat in 6 hours. Just wondering if I should try it. Thank...

Re: WI area - wood source

I guess the other thing i'm trying to figure out is how much wood and what lengths to order. In terms of what makes the most sense. I don't think i need anything over 12 feet and all are under 7" wide except for that top strake. I should check the drawings i got from Mariners, can't remember if the...

1930 Gemmer Steering Box

Should I split this gearbox here and clean out the old lube so I can add the new lube? I'm not sure if it will simply come apart at that joint. Or should I just remove the fill plug and see if it will drain and then refill? What is the bolt and jamb nut closest to the column for?
Thanks!

Re: WI area - wood source

I don't think so. Tell the lumber sales person what your doing and your finish thickness, they'll tell you what you need. I would let them resaw the boards and thickness plane myself but that's your call.

Re: WI area - wood source

Hey all, looking for recommendations on where people have gotten their wood from around the WI area. I will need to pick up some wood to replace old side planks probably in the next month. Also what is the recommended mahogany? According to Dan's book, looks like 6/4 resawn to 1/2" is appropriate. ...

Re: Side plank seam repair

I plan to route the edge of the 1st strake (from chine) to clean up the 5200 and make a new clean surface. I'm routing the seams on the transom in order to remove those planks to replace. I just finished building the router jig last night. I routed a couple seams, but the route wiggled a little bit,...

OK, From one garage restorer to another. From what I'm gathering the bottom topside plank is bedded to the newer bottom (which it should be)and hopefully a new plank like the bottom wood. Please tell me yes... I highly recommend replacing all the topside planks since your right there. You can also g...

I'm still learning. [/quote] Have you had any luck with anyone looking over the boat for what it should need? Oh yeah, It's a learning curve that's for sure and takes a whole lot of time if your not in the business of restoring boats like me. I've been in the hobby since 1999 with one restoration do...

I'm not sure if this is any interest to you but I just recently picked one of these up. It was a used one on ebay. I haven't used it yet but this was pretty much my only option for my sportsman. I can put this under the bow when not in use.

Don't be surprised if you have to steam bend the forward part of the sheer batten to get it to lay right. I had to on my 24' Chris.
Compound bend and twist.
Now I see what you mean. I think I'll try the insulated sleeve method and see if I can just do the forward third of the batten.

Tom, I have been concerned with that. I don't have a steam generator on hand. What did you use to steam your batten? Did you steam the front half only? Would like to see some photos of a steam generator.

Of course! My late brother and I bought this in 2015, he past that year. I started this project in 2019 after I retired by myself in memory of my brother John. Not sure how important this is but what is the terminology for this vertical plank that runs fore/aft. See white arrow. I'll be working on these for a while so I want to call them something that sounds correct.

A couple of questions... why do I not see the generator? I would have guessed the generator pulley broke and rubbing but I don't see it. What is the red piece at the 8 second point in the video?

Welcome aboard Eddy! I'm not experienced with original bottoms but have been around long enough to have heard all about them. Like Kiitos said, we've heard bad things happen when folks add water inside an old wood boat. Get it to the lake and let it soak, if you don't have the means to do it yoursel...

Re: Rebuild or Repower

I'm rebuilding a 430 right now. They are a very expensive motor to rebuild. Most of the internal parts are no longer available so you have to track down new old stock parts. Also the combustion chamber is in the block so you have to find a machine shop that has the jigs to bore the cylinders. Think...
