Re: Oil for the new engine
I'd go with what the builder recommended just in case of a warranty issue. Anything with Marine stamped on it is always twice the price. Usually marinized products are of a higher quality and more suited to a harsh environment. Fire that baby up! Good Luck!

Rob, I noticed in your photo of the frame repair the back side of what appears to be your interior covering paneling. Do you know what that stuff is called and what Its made of?

Sorry, can't help. I'm afraid rebuilding transmissions is beyond my mechanical capabilities. Still interesting to kinda see how it's done. Thanks for posting!

My distributors turn the same way in my counter rotating 350's. I think some do and some don't. I'd check with your engine supplier.

Looking Good! I don't envy you the grinding of the glass part of the job. Did a lot of that back in the 70's when I built glass sail boats. I'm still itchey. Carry On!

The difference is in the design and the intended use. A ski boat is built to go fast over relatively smooth water and a Comander is built to take some pounding through the chop. Both well built boats.

Could be the varnish didn't get a good bite in that area when the finish was originally done. Might have been sanded to smooth. If your not into a complete refinish, I'd stop picking at it and fair the edges of the peeled area. Build it up and then do the finish coat. Won't be perfect, but It'll loo...

Re: Older fiberglass hull construction, better or not?
I guess you'd have to ask, how thick is thick enough. Your boat is almost 50 years old. I think the fact that there's any gel coat left at all after the many years of exposure to the elements is a testament as to the original quality. It lasted a long time. Even fiberglass boats won't last forever, ...

Re: Painting the bilge
Gel coat is fine over glass, but it's pretty unforgiving if not done properly. Very careful prep, mixing, and application is a must. Paint is easier but less durable depending on type and brand. The two part epoxy paints are an option. Whatever you use, follow the manufacturers instruction carefully...

Boat looks to be in Great Shape! You'll have to deal with that dead cylinder sooner than later. My advice to new owners of good originals is do what's needed, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Happy and Safe Boating!

I'd check the oil for water, pull the plugs and check to see if there all carboned the same, do a compression test and take it from there. If all that checks out OK I'd pull the valve covers and have a look or get an experienced mechanic to have a listen.
How's the oil pressure?

I like the 2X4 clamps. Great idea! i get what your saying about the screws pulling in the panels. Your working against gravity. The plastic fasteners would be more appropriate on a flipped hull on a epoxy type bottom replacement. Carry On!

Re: Refinishing 18' 1960 Continental.
Prior to staining I stop sanding at 80 grit to give the stain and sealer a bite. Finer sanding comes later when you get into the varnish. You thin the stain with the recommended thinner to the consistency of house paint, brush on, wait a while, and wipe off to obtain an evenly stained finish. If you...

Re: Engine Operating Temperature
If the engine spec calls for operating temp of 140 and she runs at 120, I'd leave it be. Better to run a little on the cool side than too hot. I'm not an expert, but I doubt an extra 20 will improve performance. Happy Boating!

My original 1948 flag pole is made out of fur. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the fur poles just varnished and Not stained?
Troy, if available, I'd be interested in hiring your pole varnisher. My pole is not as long as yours so perhaps I could get a reduced rate.

The weather sucks. Launched the Joan Roy Wednesday thinking I'd get some varnishing done in the water, but the forecast is wet and cold. At least she's in and the rain won't interfere with my favorite boating activity. Boat Napping.

That's a problem. There is no such thing as instant gratification if you take on a restoration yourself. Takes time and a tremendous amount of skill and work. The only way to get the instant gratification, is to visit the professional restorer and write the check. My take, the main purpose of The Bu...
