Re: Rough starting with an M
Seafoam helps with certain kinds of deposits, but once a path is blocked, it won't get in there to work, so it is likely too late. Also, it does not disolves many types of contamination so don't expect miracles. I would start by adding a spin on fuel filter and then a carb disassembly and cleaning. ...

Note that the firing order will look odd to a car guy because CC renumbered the cylinders.

You can tell him with 100% certainty that that is NOT the factory original engine in a 1957 Chris Craft.

Oh yeah I hear that. Two things Squirt cannot handle well are big water with waves or boat wakes and going slow in no wake zones in canals. I'll let the wife know that we should buy another boat for that trip.

Re: Motor make
The 283 GM based V8 did not show up in any Chris Craft models until the 1959 model year although many boats have been repowered with Chevy v8's over the decades. The original motor was likely a flathead straight 6. Some variant of the CC model K engine based on the Hercules engines. Does the bill of...

Re: Intake manifold hot in middle, both sides
The passages were left open on our OMC marine conversion. The biggest downside is the extra heat can make it more prone to vapor lock. I certainly would not pull the manifold just to fix it, but next time the manifold is off I would block them off.

Re: Too much steam
It sounds like you have not tested the advance, and you are not saying what RPM you tested at. If it is right on the mark at a 600 RPM idle it may be off from where it was supposed to be set at 500. If you have an issue with the advance, it may still be on the mark at 1500 rpm when is shouldn't be.

Re: Too much steam
Retarded timing will produce very hot exhaust gasses which will give steam in a wet exhaust. It could also explain the lack of power to get to higher RPM. Loud exhaust is another. When you say right on the mark, how are you testing and at what RPM? edit: See Paul P's post linked below.

If the compression looks good check your timing again, base and total at 3000-3500 rpm.

Re: Engine Oil - What Do We Use
You can always add zddp to whatever oils you want to use as long as you don't mind a little math. I personally don't see the need to use only straight weight oil, that recommendation was put in the manual nearly a century ago without consideration of modern oils straight weight or not. I would be mo...

Re: Fiberglass Covered Hull Leak
In my opinion, that is a dangerous situation and you have a boat that could suffer a catastrophic failure and sink at any time. The combination of wood, fiberglass and water trapped in there creates a perfect environment for rot that you can't see. You may have large sections of planking and framing...

Pickled means much more than winterized, more of a complete treatment with light oil or rust protection so it will survive many years if necessary, or last more than a week is you just dunked the poor thing.

The ski pole should mount to the front of the engine, or on a frame just in front of it. Check with Jim Staib at fine wood boats.

I like the oil cooler. It does a great job collecting bits of rubber impeller every time the water pump implodes. You don't even need to run the oil through it for it to work.

Have you considered doing the repairs with a "Dutchman" so that you can just stain and varnish? There may be some visible seams left, but it will likely still look good.

Re: 1959 Chris Craft 131 HP KFL Engine Starting difficulties
To clarify, If it is turning over slow, my first suggestion is to remove the spark, not all of the plugs. You should be ably to just pull the coil wire. If that make a difference it is likely an advanced timing issue. If not, you have another problem. Even if you think all the connections are clean,...

Re: 1959 Chris Craft 131 HP KFL Engine Starting difficulties
Unhook spark and see if it is still hard to crank. If no, you may have the timing advanced too far. If yes, check all the battery and started connections and make sure they are clean and getting good contact. Check voltage before and while cranking as well. Also, make sure the fuel lines are well pr...

Has someone figured out replacement manifolds for Q engines? If you want to fully restore the boat to get near the quoted $12k in value, I would urge you to get a solid quote on a rebuilt Q engine plus put together a spreadsheet of the other parts and materials you need and their costs. I would also...
