What is this
I am in the process of restoring a 1956 CC Sportsman. I was taking apart all of the inside furnishings in order to flip the boat to start work on the bottom and when I removed the rear seat I discovered this tube. I have never seen one and I am not sure what it is. Any insight would be helpful.

Re: What is this
It's a self bailer. Make sure it is clean and not cracked

Re: What is this
When working properly, it will self bail the boat when you're up to speed and the bilge water washes aft. As Jim said, there is a small vent hole at the top of the bend to prevent unwanted siphoning and this must be clear. I would also suggest installing a ball valve sea cock on the threaded part of the through hull and then attached a hose to this using a short bronze nipple and 2 hose clamps. This way, if a hose fails or you will be leaving the boat in the water unattended for a while, you can shut the valve, preventing a leak.
BTW, I used to own a 1955 Sportsman with that same green bilge paint.

Re: What is this
Thanks, that is what I thought it was but hadn't seen one actually in the boat. Given the opportunities for leaks and such I think I will remove it and just use a bilge pump
