Greetings all,

I've received my production varification certificate on our GarWood and it seems to have raised more questions than answers! We have a 1940 model 151 does anyone know what the difference in the 150-151-152-153-154 & 155? Tony's book says that there were 20 units made for 1940. I feel fairly certain our hull was built in 1939 as it was shipped to buyer Jan. 29, 1940. Does anyone know of another out there? I'm guessing if there were only 20 of this series for 1940 there most likely are only a couple of us left.

Second question. The certificate say there were 119 boats "in series" and we are 69 of 119. But the book says production in 1939 was 160 units and 165 in 1940 so I'm just not sure what a "series" is comprised of.

Thanks in advance,

Jerri

The difference in the model numbers is the engine option. Also, whether or not it had a cabin top. Tony separates the Cabin models into a different series.

There were twenty 18'6" Deluxe Utilities designated as 1940 models. It matters very little when they were built in the calendar year, rather it is Model year cycle that is important. Your boat may have had the keel laid in December of 1939, but it was finished and entered as a 1940 model. Even if it was shipped out in December of 1939, it still would have been a 1940 model. Though Gar Woods Model year cycle was later than say Chris-Craft's (August to August in the late 1930s), it was still ahead of the calendar year by a few months.

The "series" was total production of the 18'/18'6" utility prior to WW-II. So from 1936 through 1942, 119 18'/18'6" open Utility boats were produced. The ACBS book shows 4 sister '40 models and one Cabin Utility in existence. My notes from Tony have fifteen 18' open Utilities accounted for from the 1936-1942 series.

Hope this helps.
