1962 Constellation 37'. General Help

Post by drginseng » Tue Apr 29, 2014 11:52 pm

I'm doing several repairs to a new Connie I bought. The first is the fiberglass coach roof separated at the seam while being next to a boat on fire. I'm thinking of filling the gap with 5200 and then jacking a board up against the bottom. I'm thinking about drilling and bolting it in several places and then fill the holes after removal of the bolts.

Secondly, I want to take down the headliner to rebed the rails. Has anyone came up with alternative headliner materials or finishing out the wood? Has anyone rest applied headliner material?

Lastly -for now- I have a teak decal from midship throughout the cockpit area. I'm thinking about doing something different with the bow deck. Any ideas?

OH BOY!

Look for a giant astroid to come hailing at the earth today. When Doug "The Answer Man" is looking for ideas it surely has to be a sign that the end of the world is coming.

I bet Peter Jardin has an idea or two. You should e-mail him.

We replaced the headliner in ours and it was a pain, luckily I have a friend with a 57' that did it already to help. Try to get the headliner with the foam insulation backing, it is easier to install and helps insulate heat and noise. Connie overhead stringers are 26" on center EXCEPT for the front one, and the one behind the aft lights, they are 28-1/2".

right on troy as to p! lol

Your idea for the separation repair will work pretty good...I have done similar.

as to the headliner....that is a job for the pros or you will drive yourself NUTS.....it is like sewing or facebook...real men can't do it.
Beware if/when you pull the old stuff off...there will be decades of dust up in there...a real mess.

I am in need of a headliner, for my Roamer hardtop, about 8x8. I was thinking of adhering vinyl to doorskins and attaching with molding

I will add some pictures, just been very busy. Anyone ever built a bench in front of the transom on the aft deck? In regards to taking the headliner down to rebed the rails, one boat guy says to wipe a Sikaflex around the mounts and wipe excess off with a rag and thinner.

Sikaflex is good stuff and using it to seal around the outside of a piece of hardware can work temporarily. You may get a couple of years out of it. Sounds like your trying to avoid removing the headlined to get to the fasteners. Pick your battles! There's always next year.

Thanks Tim. I'm distressed to see the dry rot damage to your boat.

I'm going to try to laminate that vinyl to mahogany door skins and hold it up with molding. Don't know if the insulated material will work. Also' I'm tossed up with going to the Sandpoint show and or
CC Rendezvous.

Doug,

Don't be tossed, the 25th CCR can't be missed! I have 6 empty bunks if you need a place to stay. Reserve you spot now! Do you want the side stateroom, bunk room or the v-berth? Will you be bringing your boat?

On my Corinthian Sea Skiff the hand rail fasteners are accesssable as the go through the headliner. The are chromed and have a nice chrome trim ring. If you don't want to replace the headliner you could cut an "X" over the screw head and the hide the cut using a plated screw and a trim washer.

Jim,
I had to remove everything as the edges to my top allowed fresh water to drip and curl under the lip and rotted the front and rear eyebrow's. I lifted the fiberglass top and it was resined all along the ribs....a real mess.

:D :D :D Where is the boat? You do realize that there is an ACBS chapter here in Seattle to help you? We have had meetings and work parties on my boat to give ideas out and get work done! We can do the same for your boat... :D

That may work. I'll check out where they come through.

You do have a local chapter, check the ACBS annual for contact info or on the website: ACBS.org

Headliner isn't that tough..... but you need a couple of specific tools..... first you need a air driven staple gun, one that you can get stainless or monel staples for.... Surbonder make a nice little staple gun that takes T50 staples, which are available in stainless. Second, you need a second person, to help hold and stretch the headliner. A panel at a time, and take your time.

Probably the best I can do is a photo tutorial on my main cabin. The boat got pushed aside this spring.... I needed a break, plus I had work to do on the house.... the maintenance staff is gettin a little slower. I will be putting in my headliner shortly.

Bethel Island is a small drinking community with a boating problem. They say it will never sink because of the boats attached to it!
