I’m planning to replace the fuel pump on my Chris Craft 1948 Model K engine and wanted to check to see if anyone had details on how to properly do this.

Can you explain what you mean by "replace" ?

Are you swapping yours out for the same fuel pump only rebuilt or are you asking about how to put a different style fuel pump on the engine ?

Yes, I'm replacing it with the same fuel pump (FP1) from Classic Boat Connections

Okay so I installed my rebuilt fuel pump on my KL and it was pretty straightforward.

You will need a new gasket between the fuel pump and the block and then it just bolts on.

Thanks Mark -

I'm assuming the lever coming off the fuel pump goes under the lifter inside the block based on the shape. Is this correct? Did you use gasket sealant when you attached the pump?
Also, are there any Torque settings for the bolts that attach the pump to the block?

I am not an engine guy so I just know that the lever went in and mine works.

I used Permatex on the gasket and I don't know of a torque spec. for the bolts.

The lever rides on the lobe. This is what makes the pump work.

Thank you for the responses.

I installed the new pump but I'm not able to get it to prime the fuel bowl using the primer lever on the pump. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot? Also, I placed some fuel in the bowl first before installing.

rotate the flywheel one turn. Fuel pump arm might be high on the lobe.

Do I need to remove the pump or can I just crank the engine over a couple of times?

Just spin the engine over. If the carb is already full. You will not be able to prime it more.

Ken,
Turn the key and hold it for a few seconds, it should fill up and start. Just be sure you do not have any leaks.
I've not once used that primer lever to prime the bowl. It will happen.
