Lil' Plastic Thingy I Found In My Bilge

Post by Stovebolt » Mon Jun 18, 2018 3:51 pm

Hello all,
So quick Readers Digest Version of my past eve.

Went for a boat ride last night, parked in middle of lake. prop shaft slides out of coupling on motor, and panic ensues. We start to paddling, and finally a nice fella drags me in, and all is well. While looking for the keyway that is lying somewhere on the bottom, I notice this little plastic doohickey staring at me. I have never seen it before, so figuring out where this goes I have no idea.

I'm hoping someone here does.

And if anyone can help me load the pictures of this little beastie, I'd be much obliged!

It looks like a plastic prop shaft log through hull fitting. I had a 1955 17' Sportsman that had a similar looking one but when I restored that boat, I replaced this with a proper bronze packing fitting with flax packing. A quality rubber hose with double hose clamps holds this to the shaft log. I could be wrong on what your picture looks like, but it appears similar.

Nah....not big enough for shaft....look at the glasses and pen.....some "not to worry" piece of plastic off something brought aboard or some such...???? don't know....because of the splined insides we are thinking this is more than it its ….could it have been on the shaft through bolt/key to hold it snug on the other end??? Let us know....or better still...forget it and re attach the shaft and Go Boating!

If it really is something of importance Dr. Rot will probably know what it is, be able to give you a part number, and have a new old stock version to sell you. :D
