1950 U22 Mercruiser 302 overheating
There was an issue overheating when we first got underway this weekend. The temperature gauge went over 200 and she died. I shut her down, waited an hour while the kids swam, and tried again without an issue. The motor was newly rebuilt in 2013 and we've never had an overheating issue with her before. I know there is a valve under the motor that enables a test on dry land, but I'm not really sure if this is the best idea to try first. Thank you for any direction on the subject.

Could need new waterpump impellers.

John,
Thank you for the thermostat idea. BTW, my wife and I bought our marriage license at the Powhatan courthouse twenty years ago! Small world!
Jim,
Thanks for the impeller idea. I will check.

Dave, sounds like you were OVERHEATED in Powhatan 20 years ago too!
Did you live around here?
Do, of course, check the impeller right off...but if she did not overheat on the restart...doubt that is the main cause....

I did, indeed, get 'overheated' twenty years ago in Powhatan!
Still an excellent choice and she loves woody boating to boot!
Jim, it was a bad impeller ( 5 of 8 flaps were gone), so this forum proves it's worth in my eyes once again.
Please enjoy your weekend and thank you again for the good advice.
