varnish polishing

Post by stefan » Thu Apr 21, 2011 6:55 am

I'm having trouble getting my last coat on my '66 Cavalier Dory varnished areas to be dust and/or spec free. Don't know if there is just too much ambient dust, dust in the foam roller or what but people are saying I should just polish the varnished areas and be done with it. I may do this but I love the glassy look of the varnish. Can one achieve this with polishing and buffing? What is the process? What product exactly? I've heard McGuires but they have several different choices. getting there. Stefan

It's possible, but you have to be very careful to keep the heat that is generated as low as possible, otherwise it will lift your varnish. I'm not sure though about which polishes are best to use. I recall an article in one of the brass bells in the past 2 years that talks about laying down a perfect varnish coat.

If you goto "Archive" and type in "Varnish Sabello" the first result is the article you're looking for. That might help you out.

That would be the last coat you put on right before it sank in deep water.

I have a dear friend who says the key to a good finish is to get nekkid and hose down the boat barn to remove all dust from the barn and lint produced by the clothing. I'm still waiting for him to invite me to a varnishing party!

Seriously, I've heard that buffing with 320 grit wet after the 3rd coat, then using finness it Grey with 3000 wet sand, then finness it cream. I've seen the results and it's stunning. I will be trying it when I get to the varnish stage of my SeaMac. Thanks Phil for the varnish and paint lesson.

Jerri, remember 2000 wet as the final sand just to knock the dust off then compound( that will get you to 3000 look, then cream compound and polish takes you to 4000 and that wet look. Bill@Southern Crown called me yesterday, as he also was impressed with Betty Boop finish and had to have the exact product #. I called your # in the directory and left you a message, but this is just as good. If you have any questions don't hesitate to call, (434) 847-7541 (434) 942-8076. I enjoyed meet ya'll at Hartwell. If you are looking for a nice fall getaway we have a good show at Smith Mt. Lake the third weekend in Sept. would love to have you join us.

Phil, Thank you so much for the update. We ordered the Makita this week, but didn't order the finess-it so your timing was perfect! I finally sanded down enough of that lifecalk so it cured and I got a coat of paint on the bare spots. I should be to coat #3 just about the time the buffer comes in.

Terry and I were working on the Sea Skiff all day today and in my "how to" book was your post on getting the copper bronze paint to a glowing finish.

I'm using Kirby paints on the SeaMac that I'm painting. I think it's going to turn out great following your instructions.

Third week in September is our Oconee benefit for the Brain Tumor Foundation..... I was going to ask you to it, but it looks like your busy. Really wish we had a get-together in July -August. September is PACKED.

It was GREAT meeting you! Jerri

This weekend I polished the paint as per Phil's instructions and the little Sea Mac looks great. I hope to have photos in the next day or two. The polishing is well worth the time (it really didn't take long at all). Phil, you're right about making sure there is not to much water on the pad... slung that stuff EVERYWHERE!

I'll polish the varnish too... when I get the last coat on.

Yep, that can happen. It really is easy if you are willing to just go for it. Glad it came out well. Spent my weekend tooling around Smith Mt. Lake on Betsy (28 1958 Connie) looking at all the brightwork I need to get started on. Oh well maybe next week.
