1931 Model 199 Seat Cushion Configuration

Leather, Tolex or Russaloid. Linoleum or black rubber matting. If it's in the cockpit or in the cabin, post your questions and answers here.

1931 Model 199 Seat Cushion Configuration

Post by russ model 199 » Thu Aug 09, 2018 4:13 pm

When I purchased my 1931 17' Split Cockpit Runabout, Model 199 it had installed some generic redish vinyl upholstery with a single wide cushion both front and back. I have finally located the correct blue russaloid and will be moving ahead with completing the work. Does anyone know for sure if the front and back had 1, 2, or three cushions across. There is a significant taper at both seats so it would seem unusual to do 3 cushions; 2 tapered and 1 square but then, it was 1931 and who knows. I did check my hull card and it only show "blue" on the upholstery line. The "Guide" shows "blue russaloid".

Thanks for any help

You may want to check with Rod Souza in California. He is the big Tahoe winning upostery guy and may know the correct set up. Its far deeper that cushions, Cushion material, the way that material is put on, the correct springs in the seat base etc.

Thanks Matt. As a regular "Woody Boater" reader, I recognize the boat list and the photo. I will give Souza a call. The 199 was the cheapest in the 1931 fleet. No springs; just a wood plank and cushion on top.

Russ, remember that "Chris Smith and Sons" boat company became superseded by "Chris-Craft" boat company between '30 and '31?

I did not recall exactly when that occurred. I will address with my question to MM.

The Mariners Museum should have drawing of that boat and that should give you the information you need. I believe there were 2 cushions in each cockpit on that boat

Thank you for your input. MM has been suggest by another knowledgeable person as well. I did purchase their "package" when I acquired the boat but cushion configuration was not included. Thanks again.

They didn't have a line drawing of the boat? It would show a top view and show the cushions. Also they may say in an advertisement or some paperwork that is seats 4 comfortably which would mean it would take 4 cushions one for every person.

Apparently the "line drawing" was not part of the package that I initially purchased. I am going to follow up with MM to see if they have that drawing. One member of a forum did show a line drawing for the 199's "big brother" with the two cushion configuration so I am guess that this much smaller version will also be 2. Thank you.

Tom, You are the best. Thank you so much. Do have a 99/199?
