Deck Maintenance Varnish

Post by Jim Godlewski » Sat May 12, 2018 8:40 am

I'm finally ready for a first maintenance varnish coat on the entire deck. The topsides, interior and transom still look fine. I have seen the interiors taped off and covered with plastic visqueen. What tape and visqueen do you recommend? Should the visqueen be precut to the cockpit shape prior to taping?
Thanks.

Jim,
Being lazy, I like the ALL-IN-ONE type.

Help me out here guys, I do not see the need for covering the interior if you are going to brush your finish. If you are going to spraying it would make sense to me. I guess it would protect the interior from any sanding dust. Maybe I answered my own question. :?

My thought here is since I'm only doing the deck, I do not want to take a chance on any varnish drips on the interior or the sides while I'm rolling. Maybe it's overkill but I would rather just cover it and not have to worry. This is my first maintenance coat so I'm definitely not an expert at the process. I'm going for two coats.

It’s not overkill. I can’t even open a can without making a mess.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

Makes sense to me. :D

It sounds like you are going to roll and tip. May I ask what varnish you plan on using?
